Beautiful double-sided work by Odette Pauvert. This is a village scene, maybe in Portugal or Spain. Signed lower left. Biography of the artist: She is the daughter of the painter Henri Pauvert (1864-1951), a pupil of Léon Bonnat and William Bouguereau and of Louise Pauvert née Cochet (1870-1950). His parents, as well as his sister Marguerite Pauvert (1902-1983) were also painters. Odette Pauvert was first a pupil of her mother, before joining the studio of the painter Ferdinand Humbert at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1921. She won several successes in her early years: the Jauvin prize 'Attainville was awarded to her in 1922 for Solitude, and she won the test of the sketch painted in 1925 with Adam and Eve. She participated very early in the Salon of French Artists where she exhibited regularly, obtaining an honorable mention in 1922, a bronze medal in 1924, a silver medal in 1923 and 1926, and finally a gold medal in 1928. competition for the Prix de Rome of 1923 with Le Golgotha, she won in 1925 with her Legend of Saint Ronan, thus becoming the first woman winner of the Prix de Rome for painting. As such, she spent her stay in Rome at the Villa Medici between 1926 and 1929, where she painted several compositions. She performed there in 1928 a copy of La Messe de Bolseng after Raphaël, but above all produced the group portrait of the Class of 1926 (1927, Rome, Académie de France in Rome, where she represented herself alongside the musician Louis Forestier of the sculptor Evariste Jonchère and architect Alfred Audoul She returned to France in 1929 She became a member of the Ateliers d'Art Sacré and on her return from Rome took part in several official projects. She painted a fresco on the theme of The Mother and the child for the vestibule of the elementary school of the rue Jomard in Paris after having won the order following the competition launched by the City of Paris in 1933. She participated in the decorations of the Church of the Holy Spirit in 1932, where were active all the most important "official" painters of the decade, and worked on several pavilions for the Universal Exhibition of 1937 in Paris The Sainte-Croix museum in Poitiers devoted a retrospective exhibition to him in 1986.
