Portrait of a Viennese Gentleman created in the 1820s and is a typical work of the outstanding Austrian-German portrait painter and early 19th century military painter, Johann Peter Krafft (1780 Hanau - 1856 Vienna). The subject, the style and the composition of this one are very close to the works of Krafft (See Monograph "Johann Peter Krafft" by M. Frodl-Schneemann, Herold Edition, Vienna-Munich, 1978.).

Johann Peter Krafft has become for Austrian painting of crucial importance. He was a leading classical-style history and portrait painter in Vienna, but he also later influenced the development of genre painting in the Viennese Biedermeier era (through his painting Die Heimkehr des Landwehrmannes, 1820). Krafft created important history images of patriotic content for Austria and its emperor house. He was eventually also active as a restorer in Schönbrunn Palace and the Jesuit Church in Vienna. Johann Peter Krafft affected the painting of Ferdinand George Waldmueller.
