MONGE Jules (1855-1934)"Dog trainer clown"
Oil on cardboard,
Signed lower left,
Beautiful and rare finely produced work by the Marseille painter Jules Monge which represents a scene from the circus world and more precisely a trainer clown making a turn to his poodle.
Around 1905/1910, the artist produced a series of small paintings on the world of the circus where he represented animated scenes of clowns and animals.
Our painting is similar to the work of Jules Monge representing a balancing act clown, in a smaller format, which went on sale at Artcurial on January 20, 2016 in a Tribute to the Circus sale.
Student of Cabanel and Detaille at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris. He becomes professor of drawing at the International Institute of Paris. He exhibited at the Salon from 1881 to 1933 where he obtained many successes. Specializing in military scenes, he also produces portraits and a series of paintings on the world of the circus. He frequented the artistic milieu of Marseille and befriended the painter Adolphe Monticelli, whose portrait he painted.
His works are kept in various museums such as the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée de l'Armée in Paris but also in Marseille, Toulon, Besançon, ...
