Bordeaux painter, student of Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant, Jean-Pierre Carré exhibited nudes and interiors at the Salon des Artistes Français of which he was a member.
This work is annotated on the reverse with a pen (very erased): "in Capri? The bird? Act IV (...) had never spoken". The Musée des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux has two self-portraits of this artist.
