Object description :

"A Louis XIV Mazarin Desk, 17th Century Circa 1660"
Mazarin desk all sides in natural walnut and massive ash wood, oak frames. It opens with five curved drawers in three rows on the front and with a hatch on the back; two sets of two supported and a long trompe l'oeil belt. Each of the lateral series rests on four straight baluster legs, connected to each other by “X” spacers, themselves joined by a double winding spacer. Under the belt drawer a recess recessed center the two sets of drawers allowing room for the knees. The sides and the back are mounted on tables thus harmonizing with the moldings of the drawers. The back is centered by a latch hatch opening onto a cover where the "cassette" was slid away from curious looks. All topped with a wooden keyed top, mounted in sinuous tabs. The tray and drawer set is decorated with a contrasting walnut ash frame. Work in the Rhône valley or even Lyonnais from the Louis XIV period, second part of the 17th century. Use and maintenance restorations Dimensions: H 75.5cm W 102.5cm D 64 cm. The Mazarin desks were designed by the desire for modernity of Cardinal Mazarin Minister of Louis XIV from 1642 to 1661. These desks were to be used at an angle, with one knee below the writing surface and another knee outside. This position was necessary because at the time the wealthy able to read and write were members of the nobility. However according to the label, the members of the nobility constantly carried at their side a sword in a scabbard, which would have made the use of a modern office difficult. However, these desks are made to be used with both legs under the work surface.
