Object description :

"Jean-baptiste-claude Séné, Pair Of Louis XVI Armchairs Stamped I.b Sene"
Jean-Baptiste-Claude Séné, pair of Louis XVI armchairs stamped I.B.SENE, 18th century, circa 1770.
Pair of cabriolets in molded, carved and lacquered beech wood, beautiful ample woodwork with curved medallion backs topped with knotted ribbons, where the armrests embrace. The armrests are provided with cuffs and their noses are placed on the top of the arch of the armrests; they rest on cubic connection points carved with rosettes at the level of the front foot. The base consists of four feet. All are tapered with deep flutes, rudent for the front ones, strangled in their pinched tops at their bases. The shaft of the woodwork is harmoniously traversed by a frieze of twisted ribbons alongside pearl grapes and deep grooves. Balance, nervousness, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this beautiful and very fine pair of seats. It is worth noting the great care given to the linking elements of impeccable quality. The stamp I.B.SENE for Jean-Baptiste Sené is stamped under each of the front crosspieces of the two armchairs.
Jean Baptiste Claude Sené (1747-1803) is from a great dynasty of Parisian chair makers of the 18th century. Established in the rue de Clery, he is without context the most famous of the lineage and even the greatest master of the Louis XVI reign as Pierre Kjellberg explains in his book "Le mobilier Français du 18 ème siècle page 848 : I quote : the originality and the exceptional quality of his work make this carpenter the great master of the French seat of the Louis XVI reign in the same way as Georges Jacob whom he equals and sometimes surpasses. The furniture guard recruited Jean-Baptiste Séné in 1785; he worked for Madame Elisabeth in Montreuil, Madame Louise in St Denis, the Count of Provence, the Duke of Penthièvre or the Prince of Condé but it is his production for Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI in their chateaux of Versailles but also St Cloud, Fontainebleau or Compiègne which makes him enter the legend of the greatest Parisian carpenters. Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené, was received master in 1769.
