Wedding Of Cana Antonio Cifrondi

The painting, oil on canvas, 132 x l09 cm without frame and 141 x 118 cm with frame, representing the Marriage in Cana in a scenic architecture of classic taste, is the work of Antonio Cifrondi (Clusone 1656 - Brescia 1730).

This is explicitly indicated by the body of the brushstroke, which is fast and fast, which never lingers on the finish, the warm colors played on the reds and on the grounds, but above all the physiognomies of the characters, really unmistakable, that we find on the whole his production both sacred and profane. The figures with which he clutters his scenes are always popular and seem the same as his genre canvases, but in this version of Marriage at Cana, the painter also reveals an obvious interest in courtly painting of the 16th century Venetian. Think of the similar subject painted by Paolo Veronese and today at the Louvre museum, but especially the specimen painted by Andrea Michieli for the Church of San Trovaso in Venice, from which the Cifrondi scene derives, perhaps with the mediation of the press. who from the painting of Vicentino, he drew the engraver Martin Pleginck.

Cifrondi repeated the theme twice more, in the canvas of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and San Giacomo in Albino and in the other in Santa Maria a Scanzorosciate, where we also review the delicious details of the little dog sticking out from under the tablecloth flap. In these, however, the painter focuses more on the protagonists and offers less space on the outline, even if, as in our case, he focuses on the details of the still life of the table set.
