"Navette De Frivolité, écaille Blonde & Or, Fin Du XVIIIe Siècle"
  • Navette de Frivolité
  • Gold and tortoiseshell
  • France, second half of the 18th century
  • Dim: 11.8 cm by 3.3 cm
  • Good condition, slight impact on the side of one of the faces,
  • Blond tortoiseshell tatting shuttle with mounting studs in gold in the shape of flowers.
  • The shuttles are used to wind the yarn and work for the weaving and lace works. Thread lace made by hand using this process is called Frivolité. This use of the shuttle is typical of the 18th century. They made it possible for the ladies to appear occupied "with a small work and that they had the necessary maintenance", according to Madame de Genlis: virtuous occupation allowing the hands of these ladies to be highlighted. We find an example of this in Nattier's portrait of Madame Adélaïde. These shuttles, luxury items as well as the snuffbox, were sold by merchant-mercers. We find them in all kinds of materials: or, steel unmasking, cutting, porcelain, mother-of-pearl ... and tortoiseshell.
