Object description :

"Jesus And The Samaritan Woman - Flemish School Of The First Quarter XVIIth Century"
Oil on copper entourage of Hendrick van Balen who is a Flemish painter and decorator of furniture, born in Antwerp in 1575, died in 1632. Tired of the road, Jesus was simply seated at the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman from Samaria arrives to draw water. Jesus said to him, “Give me a drink.” His disciples, indeed, had gone to the city to buy food. But this woman, this Samaritan woman, said to him: '' How? You, a Jew, you ask me to drink to me, a Samaritan woman! '' John 4, 6 to 9 but you have to read the whole scene John 4, 1 to 43 The artist deploys his talent, especially in the representation, full of grace, of the woman, who holds all her attention - we imagine she is totally fascinated by the model who poses before him - by using refined colors. He even allows himself, for the mantle of Christ, the use of bright red. In the background, the leafy and deep landscape is imbued with the Flemish tradition of the 16th and 17th centuries. Inscriptions on the back that have remained mysterious to this day (see photographs) have not yet revealed all the keys that would allow the painter to be identified. Beautiful old frame in gilded and blackened wood.
