Object description :

"Giaele Et Sisala Bartolomeo Litterini"
Painting oil on canvas with the dimensions of 60 x 45 without frame and 75 x 60 with frame by the painter Bartolomeo Litterini (Venice 1669 - 1748).

This painting tells a story from the Old Testament: A short episode from the Book of Judges tells how Sisara, the young general of the king of Cazor, enemy of the Israelites, was beaten by Barak, beaten up by the prophetess Deborah: he fled and thought he was finding refuge in Eber's tent, which he believed to be the ally of his sovereign. Giael, Eber's wife, offered him hospitality and gave him a drink, but after Sisara fell asleep, he trapped him in the temple; then he went to meet Barak and showed him the downed enemy.

Knowing the sacred character with which the foreign guest is invested with the Orientals, one could be surprised - and above all scandalized - by the episode. But the song of Deborah, which also alludes to a noble nature of Sisara, very attentive to the elderly mother, essentially tends to enhance Giaele's temerity; there can be no salvation for those who, like Sisara, worship false gods ("Blessed are the women of Jael ... that all your enemies may perish, Lord").
