Object description :

"Adriaen Van Ostade (* 1610 In Haarlem; † 1685)"
Adriaen van Ostade (* 1610 in Haarlem, baptized on December 10, 1610; † 1685, buried on May 2, 1685 in Haarlem; maiden name Adriaen Hendricx) In the village school oil on wood 47 x 35 cm and 55 x 43 cm Various seals on the back Old section of a catalog entry on the back (there is also an autograph work) Provenance: Marquis de Praslin collection Adriaen van Ostade was the son of a baker from Lubeck. He became (with Adriaen Brouwer) a pupil of Frans Hals and was active in his own way until about 1639. From then on, he adopted the painting style of Rembrandt, who had already accommodated his penchant for the pictorial realization of chiaroscuro contrasts. He died on May 2, 1685 in Haarlem. Ostade painted a large number of genre paintings, mostly humorous, even "single digit", in small format, drawn from the lives of citizens and farmers: smokers, drinkers, players, charlatans, dancers, brawlers, etc. . In the first period of his work, influenced by Hals, from which about forty images can be drawn, one can note a search for sharp and clear characteristics and a rough humor. The paintings of the second period are characterized not only by the chiaroscuro effect, but also by a contemplative approach and a warm sense of humor. The paintings of the third period (mainly interiors with characters) are characterized by a careful execution in a bright and luminous tone. His paintings can be found in the galleries of Berlin, Dresden, Vienna (Imperial Gallery, Liechtenstein), Paris (Louvre), Munich (Pinacotheque), Amsterdam, The Hague and Saint Petersburg. Their number rises to around 400. The major works are: The Organ Mill and the Peasant Society in Berlin, The interior of a hut and the schoolmaster at the Louvre, The peasants at the tavern in Munich, The charlatan in Amsterdam, The peasants festival in Petersburg, The painter's workshop in Amsterdam and The easel painter in Dresden. He also left numerous watercolors, pen drawings and engravings. Inv. No. 4.251
