"Aubusson Tapestry The Banquet"
Aubusson tapestry, 17th century - The Banquet of Alcinous The Banquet of Alcinous, a mythological French tapestry, of the History of Ulysses, Aubusson, woven in wool and silk, fresh colors, after the cardboard of Isaac Moillon period XVIIth century . Alcinoos was the son of Nausithoos, son of Poseidon and Périboea. But Conon the grammarian tells that he was son of Phaeax, eponymous Pheacians, son of Poseidon and Corcyra. He states that when Phaeax died Alcinoos retained the kingdom and his other son, Locros, moved to Italy where he married Laurina, the daughter of Latinos to found the colony of Locri. With his wife Areta, daughter of Rhexenor, his three (or five) sons and his daughter Nausicaa, Alcinoos gave hospitality to foreigners in difficulty, and especially to shipwrecked. In his palace, the Argonauts halted and met Medea who was returning to his father Aeetes. Caught as a judge, Alcinoos decided to give Medea back to his father as long as she was still a virgin and if not, Jason could bring him with him. Arete hastened to have the two young men meet in a subterranean vault, then she organized a wedding and thus avoided Medea the punishment awaiting him at Colchis. The Colchidian ambassadors preferred to settle in Corcyra rather than face the wrath of Aeetes on their return. The Argonauts went back to sea with Medea aboard. Ulysses in the palace of Alcinoos Marc CHAGALL The best known of his guests, Ulysses, found refuge in his home, after a storm that had thrown him, deprived of everything, on the shores of the island. Nausicca led him to his father's palace where he recounted his journey. Alcinoos comforted the heroes and offered him the products of his magical gardens, where the rarest fruits ripened all year round. In spite of Nausicaa's nascent love, Ulysses decided to leave for his homeland. Alcinoos had a magical ship armed-without oars or rudders-especially for him. And "Nausicaa with white arms" greeted Ulysses for the last time: "Hello, my host, please Gods, when you are in your homeland, remember me for whom you owe your life."
