"19th Century Boulle Wall Clock"

Royal Antique is proud to present this exceptional example of 19th-century craftsmanship, this French wall clock embodies the opulence and refinement of the Boulle marquetry tradition, inspired by the work of André-Charles Boulle. The clock features a meticulously crafted case, combining ebony veneer with intricate inlays of brass and contrasting material (likely tortoiseshell or a similar colored material), creating a striking contrast that highlights the artistry of this period.

Case and Ornamentation:

  • Sumptuous Boulle Marquetry: The clock's curvilinear case and its matching bracket are adorned with characteristic Boulle marquetry, where gilt brass and a contrasting material (reddish, likely tortoiseshell) are inlaid into an ebony ground. This technique creates intricate patterns and elegant arabesques across the entire surface.

  • Exquisite Gilt Bronze Mounts: The gilt bronze mounts are of exceptional quality, showcasing finely cast and chiseled ornamentation, including classical motifs such as scrolling foliage, lush acanthus leaves, and rocaille elements. Two stylized male figures, evoking deities or marine nymphs, flank the lower part of the dial, resting upon a grand shell and radiating sun motif.

  • Sculptural Finial: Atop the case, a sculptural gilt bronze finial depicts a cherub or putto ascending, adding a regal and playful touch to the piece.

  • Elegant Dial: The clock face is framed by an elaborate gilt bronze bezel and features Roman numerals on individual white enamel cartouches, set against an intricately engraved gilt brass dial. The central medallion is embellished with fine engraving, and the signature "C. LE ROI À PARIS" is clearly visible, attesting to its Parisian origin and the quality of its clockmaker.

  • Ornate Bracket: The lower section of the clock is complemented by an equally ornate matching bracket, richly decorated with gilt bronze appliqués and scrollwork, extending the cartel's magnificence.

Movement and Decorative Impact:

  • Original Mechanism: The original mechanism has been carefully preserved, speaking to the precision and technical expertise of 19th-century French horology.

  • Decorative Masterpiece: This masterpiece is not only a functional timepiece but also a testament to the enduring appeal of French decorative arts. Its grandeur and historical significance make it an exceptional addition to any distinguished collection or interior, bringing an ambiance of opulence and historical refinement.
