Alphonse Giroux And Duvinage, Large Japanese Bowl With Storks In Marquetry And Cloisonne

Artist: Ferdinand Duvinage Et Alphonse Giroux
Large cup in gilded bronze and silvered bronze held by three storks forming the base. It is decorated with a central marquetry in ivory and precious wood (rosewood, rosewood) partitioned in chiseled brass. This decoration represents a pheasant chasing a grasshopper at the edge of a water point and branches. Work in the Japanese taste signed in the decor "FD Bté" for Ferdinand Duvinage Patented. And on the strapping of the "Maison Alphone Giroux Paris" cup. Indeed, this cut is the result of a collaboration between the famous manufacturer of art objects and furniture Alphonse Giroux, and the marquetry maker Duvinage, specialized in finely worked marquetry in the Japanese style. Remember that this enthusiasm for the Japanese arts had unleashed strong passions in France at the end of the 19th century. The Duvinage firm specialized in this type of marquetry at the end of the 19th century. In 1877, the widow of Ferdinand Duvinage (1813-1874) obtained a patent for this type of decoration, which combined wood marquetry with brass cloisonné on an ivory background. This process will meet with great commercial success and won him many medals during the universal exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. We find a dish with an identical decoration in the Museum of Decorative Arts. Other works by Duvinage and Giroux are kept at the Musée d'Orsay, the MET in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago. Cup in very good condition, the marquetry has no defects except for a few cracks in the ivory and two tiny gaps in the brass branches, very little visible.
