Beautiful and luminous work of the Marseille painter Édouard Crémieux which represents a corner of the old port of Marseille animated by fishermen on their boats. In the background, we can see the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde.
The artist was able to transcribe the atmosphere of the end of the day with plays of light and the use of soft colors.

We can compare our painting to another work by the artist on a similar subject: "Le pontoon sur le port de Marseille" which went on sale in October 2010 in Marseille.

A pupil of Guindon then of Ferdinand Cormon, Bouguereau and Tony-Fleury at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Edouard Crémieux returned to Marseilles where he established himself as one of the masters of the Ecole Provençale. He exhibited at the Salon of French artists from 1884 to 1914 and in regional exhibitions (Aix, Avignon, Nîmes, Marseille…).
A Jew, he was deported on April 29, 1944 from the Drancy camp to Auschwitz and was assassinated on his arrival in May 1944 with his wife.

His works are now kept in the museums of Cannes, Cassis, Marseille…
