FUCHI KASHIRA 
Japan, Edo period (1603-1868) 
Copper, gold, brass, silver 
H. 1.7 ; L. 3.5 ; W. 2.1 cm 
 
This fuchi and kashira, two elements of the katana scabbard, are made of black lacquered copper with applied decoration of flying bats in a night sky. The crescent moon and the two animals are enhanced with silver.
