The artwork we are selling has also been the subject of exhibitions, it has an incomplete label on the frame dated 1930, we also found a passage in auctions in New York in 1944 where it was mentioned an exhibition at Versailles.
Pupil of Jean-Léon GÉRÔME, Ferdinand GUELDRY is a sought-after painter, especially for his rowing and boating scenes, which can exceed 100,000 euros at auctions, frequently around 20,000 - 30,000 euros. Almost all of his masterpieces are the property of public collections, such as "L'ecluse de Molesey" at the Nogent-sur-Marne Museum.
He produced little (around 200 oils known until now), focusing on the production of high quality paintings to show at various exhibitions, including the Salon des Artistes Français where he exhibited his works 54 times between 1878 and 1938, being rewarded there 4 times !
He was decorated knight of the Legion of Honor in 1908.
Meticulous and demanding, in search of perfect compositions (hence a substantial upstream work), he devotes a lot of time to the elaboration of his major paintings, large measurements, regularly acquired by the French State.
He stopped to paint in 1938 and spent the last years of his life in Switzerland.
Here you have the opportunity to acquire an artwork by this rare and so talented artist, a superb preparatory work for a museum painting, which has been exhibited and which will be included in the painter's catalogue raisonne !
