Topeng Mask From Dieng, Central Java. Traditional Dance, Indonesia flag

Object description :

"Topeng Mask From Dieng, Central Java. Traditional Dance, Indonesia"
The Dieng plateau is located off the beaten track in Central Java, and until recently was home to a popular show from the tradition of the Hindu dance "Lengger" originating from Banyumas in the center of the island of Java.
One of the most sacred dances, it features Prince "Asmoro Bangun" in love with Dewi Sekartaji, daughter of Raden Wijaya.
The mask proposed here has all the assets to present Prince Asmoro. Its polychromy dates back to the second half of the 20th century and its patina attests to intensive and very old use.
This dance, mimed by a masked man and a woman, has remained popular even under the influence of Islam.

A rare selection of ancient Javanese "Topeng" masks is available.
