Lionello (also Leonello) Spada 1576 Bologna - May 17, 1622 Parma) The Penitent Mary Magdalene Oil on canvas 71 x 95.5 cm canvas Provenance: Former Italian private collection The painting is traditionally considered a work by Spada himself. On the back are various handwritten notes, stamps and numerals from different eras. Spada was active in his hometown of Bologna as well as in Rome and came from the circle of Caravaggio. He was trained in the studio of Cesare Baglioni and collaborated with Girolamo Curti on perspective decorations, now lost. Spada took part in the competition for the order of the frescoes of the Sala del Tesoro of the Sacred House of Loreto, which were then entrusted to Roncalli. He then joined the Accademia degli Incamminati and painted in 1607 the fresco of miraculous fish in the hospital of San Procolo in Bologna. In 1609, Spada traveled to Rome and then to Malta, where he was influenced by Caravaggio painting. The caravaggio San Giovanni Evangelista, preserved in the Capuchin church in Rome, survives from these years. In 1612 he devoted himself to the decoration of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Pieve di Cento, and returned to Bologna in 1614 to work in the Basilica of Ghiara in Reggio Emilia.
