Painter of Belgian origin born in Brussels in 1900, Charles Herman Hoffman comes from a family of artists: he is the son of Guillaume-François Hoffman (1863-?), painter and professor of anatomy, and the brother by Lucien Hoffman (1891-1951), sculpture and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. A discreet artist, Charles Hoffman mainly produces portraits, still lifes and interior scenes representing moments stolen from the intimate life of the home. The physiognomy of the model represented on our canvas comes up repeatedly in the artist's work, which suggests that it was a person from his close circle.
