William Jurian Kaula (1871-1953) Crécy-en-Brie, 1897 Watercolor on paper signed lower right and titled Crécy-en-Brie 1897 34x24cm Provenance: Private collection New Hampshire Famous for his impressionist landscapes of the Monadnock region in the New Hampshire. William Kaula is one of the principal painters of the Boston Museum School. Born in Boston in 1871, William J. Kaula began her artistic studies at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and the Cowles Art School before leaving for Paris and enrolling at the Julian and Colarossi Academies. In 1894 he met in Crécy-en-Brie, (most probably among the community of artists who frequented the Grand Morin valley), his wife, Lee Lufkin (1865-1957), also American, painter and student at the Academy Colarossi. They married in 1902. The Kaulas were among the first occupants of Fenway Studios in Boston. Over the next forty years, the couple traveled, collected antiques, laid out gardens at their New Hampshire estate, and most importantly painted together, sharing a relationship based on their mutual respect and a shared love of art. Today, the works of William Kaula are displayed in numerous museums, including the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington,.
