Rare cracked Art Deco Marine earthenware from the 20s/30s representing Our Lady of the Sea. Inscription on the front. Mary, Star of the Sea, or Our Lady, Star of the Sea is an ancient title for the Virgin Mary. The words "star of the sea" are a translation of the Latin title "Stella Maris". This title has been used since at least the early medieval period. Originally stemming from a typographical error in a supposed etymology of Mary's name, it appeared as allegorical of Mary's role as "guiding star" on Christ's path. Under this name, the Virgin Mary would intercede in particular as a guide and protector of sailors. The Apostolate of the Sea and many coastal churches are named Stella Maris or “Star of the Sea” or “Our Lady of the Sea”. The sea anchor signifying stability, strength and hope. Turning now to the symbolism of the White robe, Christians consider white as the symbol of a new life. By the way, in the Christian representation, the clothes of Christ are also white. The little fish featured on her dress signifying faith, abundance and, most importantly, charity. To understand the spiritual significance of the fish in the Bible, one must have the Gospels in mind. Jesus called his disciples “fishers of men”. In this case, the biblical meaning of the fish is that man stands in an abyss of sin and needs redemption. Inscription "JOIRE" on the left side. Earthenware slightly bluish on the back. Signature on the back illegible. Piece can be unique.
