This magnificent work, a true pearl of the early Renaissance Lombard, is obviously linked to the catalog of Giovan Pietro Rizzoli called the Giampietrino, Leonardo da Vinci's favorite pupil. In addition to the stylistic characteristics, truly unique and incomparable, the attribution is attested by comparisons with some of his similar paintings, in particular with the table exhibited in the Museum of the Diocese of Milan, which unequivocally presents the identical pictorial peculiarities. (See photo) The version of the "Door of the Cross" proposed here differs in the posture of Christ facing the viewer on the left side and in the position of the hands. Among the known versions of this subject, it is surely one of the most interesting interpreted by the Milanese maestro Giampietrino, who works closely with Leonardo da Vinci, assimilates the pictorial lesson and a strong charge of esotericism that distinguishes the faces characters depicted.
