Leonor Fini - Juliette, Marquis De Sade - Rare Ink Drawing - Erotica - 1944

Exceptional Indian ink drawing by the surrealist artist Léonor FINI, reproduced in the book "Histoire de Juliette" (or "the prosperity of vice") published in 1944. This new edition of the novel by the Marquis de SADE originally published in 1797, printed in 200 copies, included 22 illustrations by Léonor FINI (one of her first works as an illustrator) who represented Juliette in all the violence of her desire, bringing a new visual reading to the work.

This drawing is of very high graphic quality, there are few works by Leonor FINI on the market with such a fine line and such a successful and libertine subject.
It also comes from the estate of the writer Regine DEFORGES (author among others of "the blue bicycle") which gives it an even greater interest.

Leonor Fini is a surrealist painter, theater designer and writer of Italian origin.
Born to an Italian mother and an Argentinian father, her childhood and adolescence were spent in Trieste, Italy, with her mother and her maternal family. She did not know her father, who passed away very early. In a bourgeois environment, very cultured, she acquired a cosmopolitan culture. She left her family at 17 to settle in Milan and began to paint. In 1937, she left Italy for Paris and met André Breton and the surrealists. Inspired by their theories, she experimented with “automatic drawing”. It is alone that she explores a dreamlike universe featuring characters with closed eyes (most often women). Young people, a little androgynous, languid in the face of protective sphinxes evolve or dream in an atmosphere of ceremonial celebration where eroticism flirts with cruelty. His first monographic exhibition took place in New York in 1939. Leonor Fini made numerous portraits, made costumes for theatre, ballet and opera and illustrated texts. Leonor often stayed withdrawn from the world, but not without festivities, having had houses in the Loire, in Corsica (Saint François convent near Nonza). Leonor Fini loved cats, she painted many paintings and drew several sketches and watercolors in homage to cats.
