Biographical notes: As a teenager, Gabriel Dauchot showed a strong passion for painting and his father, an architect, encouraged him to continue. At fourteen he studied at the Grande Chaumière in Paris, a pupil of Othon Friesz. In 1942 he worked with Yves Brayer and the same year he made his debut at the Salon des Moins de Trente ans; in 1944, at the age of seventeen, he was admitted to the Salon d’Automne, of which he became a partner in 1948. His participation in the Salon became regular, as did his participation in the Salon des Tuileries. The first personal exhibition of him is in 1945 at the Katia Granoff gallery. The Cardo gallery offered him the signing of an exclusive contract starting in 1948. In 1951 he received the Prix de la Societé des Amaterus et Collectionneurs d’art décerné. He is nicknamed the "Painter of human comedy" for his anonymous characters, dreamers, acrobats who mix with those drawn from the world of acrobats, pierrots, harlequins. He often paints grotesque funerals, melancholy landscapes. René Domergue instead calls him the "merchant of wonders". His painting is pasty, colorful, expressionist.
In 1956 the Durand-Ruel gallery organized an important exhibition for him entitled "Ten years of painting" which collects 65 works.
The exhibition was enormously successful, so much so that the following year he was able to exhibit in New York, at the Juster gallery. From 1953 he exhibited at the Hattfield Gallery in Los Angeles and in 1958 he returned to the Durand-Ruel gallery in Paris. In 1959 he was at the gallery 55 in Cannes, in 1960 again at Durand-Ruel, in 1963 at the gallery André Weil. In 1969 and 1971 at the Yves Jaubert gallery, in 1980 at the Guigné gallery, in 1982 at the Closerie des Lilas. Between 1951 and 1982 he regularly participated in the Salon des Peintres Temoins de leur Temps. In 1954 he was invited to the Charpentier gallery, he appeared in numerous group exhibitions including "France-Italy" in Turin in 1955, at the Salon Comparaison in 1957, '58 and from 1960 to 1962. From the eighties his palette cleared, leaving free course to his mood, creating compositions of great freedom. In 1986 he exhibited at the “Au souffle de Paris” gallery in Saint-Louis. In 1989, the French state bought one of his works at the anthological exhibition at the Katia Granoff shop in Paris.
