Pair Of Very Beautiful Vases In Sèvres Porcelain XIXth Century

Artist: Sèvres
Pair of Large Covered Sèvres Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Vases – Mythological Decor – Napoleon III Period

An impressive and elegant pair of covered vases in Sèvres porcelain with cobalt blue ground, richly mounted with finely chased gilt bronze.

Of tall baluster form, each vase features a hand-painted scene on the body depicting a female allegory accompanied by cupids (putti) within a delicately rendered landscape setting. The flesh tones are exquisitely refined, the draperies subtly modeled, and the softly clouded backgrounds demonstrate high pictorial quality in the 18th-century taste.

The painted decorations are signed C. Labarre (Charles Labarre), a renowned porcelain painter active in the 1890s and deceased in 1906. He notably collaborated with Doulton Burslem and Sèvres. His work is distinguished by refined Neoclassical painting in soft tonalities, inspired by the antique imagination—perfectly illustrated in this pair.

The necks and covers are enriched with gilt reserves and scrolling motifs on a deep blue ground, characteristic of productions inspired by the Royal Manufacture of Sèvres. The finials are surmounted by finely sculpted gilt bronze putti.

The gilt bronze handles, openworked and elegantly scrolling, terminate in foliate volutes. The vases stand on substantial circular gilt bronze bases lavishly adorned with mascarons, garlands, and scrolled feet, lending the ensemble remarkable decorative presence.

This pair perfectly embodies the Napoleon III taste for 18th-century revival styles and spectacular decorative pieces intended for refined interiors.
