Reiss Alfred César (1845-1909) Painter From Bagne Camp De Tollinche Guyana St Jean Du Maroni
Artist: Reiss Alfred César (1845-1909)
Alfred César REISS, a miniaturist painter, was sentenced to life imprisonment in Montpellier on November 18, 1893 for murder and robbery. He will be sent to the penal colony of Guyana in 1894. He will escape twice but will be recaptured each time. He died in prison in 1908. Through these paintings most often made in small formats, we will follow his journey from Kourou to the forest camp of Tollinche near St Jean du Maroni via Venezuela and Guatemala where his two escapes were conducted. He probably had to join the sea by the Maroni river to then drift to Guatemala. The precision of these works testify to his ability to make miniature paintings.
