Albert Duprat developed his artistic skills at the School of Fine Arts in Venice, his birthplace. His works reveal his love for Italy and in particular for Venice constantly represented in his paintings with canals, monuments and splendid views of the lagoon. With great skill, still inspired by late 19th century French painting, he portrayed the fantastic views of the city in a light favorable to his twilight vision. Light was really something that Duprat was passionate about, and the chiaroscuro effects of the light on the water and the sky are always very present in his paintings. In "On the Grand Canal", in Venice, there is a soft yellow sky similar to that of Turner, which initially inspired Monet and his company to represent atmos effects pherics in their paintings. "Gondola in Venice" also shows that Duprat's skills are also reflected in figurative painting. With a few quick brushstrokes, Duprat creates a typical Venetian image with a gondola sliding down a canal. Duprat also moved to Paris for a period and, unsurprisingly, he chose to paint the Seine and its bridges, where his extraordinary ability to represent the reflections of light on the water, is expressed in wider panoramas and brighter. Our canvas is certainly a work that excellently expresses all its pictorial credo in one of the most typical representations of its repertoire.
