Carved in the trunk of a tree fern adorned with a ROM mask.
Collected on Ambrym Island in the village of Olal It was part of the Nassara ferns,
supporting the lower part of the frame.
These ferns carved with a Roma mask are very rare because the Roma masks are worn during ceremonies for the ROM dance.
Protected from the eyes of women and children during their construction,
they are generally burned after use.
The Rom dance is sacred, it maintains and renews the spiritual and social bonds of the community.
