19th Century Mantel Clock Napoleon III Period

This mantel clock is made in a neoclassical style from the Napoleon III period (1824-1830). The base of the clock is in turquoise malachite and gilded bronze. Malachit is well known for providing exceptional color but also for being a unique material which has the effect of purifying the air and warding off harm for the owner. The upper part of the clock is made of dark brown brass to serve as a base to highlight the two main characters in gilded bronze who are the key elements. The man is seen on his knees to show his respect and admiration for the beautiful girl sitting in a posture of a queen. The two figures depicted on the clock are so lifelike that their faces clearly show their expressions. The contours of the plinth are all expertly inlaid with gilded bronze by the craftsman to create distinctive patterns such as anthemia and acanthus. In addition, the two lower corners of the pedestals represent two dragons proudly holding their heads high. The enamel dial features 12 Roman numerals for the hours and 12 Arabic numerals for the minutes. The two leaf-patterned seconds and hour hands are in gilded bronze, expressing elegance and nobility.
