Gandhara (now Pakistan and Afghanistan), 1st-5th century AD Length 29 cm, height 18 cm, height with base 21 cm. The state of conservation is visible in the photos. A relief carved in the stone (schist) presents a scene from the life of Buddha Shakyamuni. The Buddha and other figures are depicted in long robes with carved draperies, and the composition resembles Hellenistic friezes from Greek and Roman temples. The Buddha is seated on a plinth in the lotus position, and all the other figures face him with their hands in prayer. The sculptor showed the figures in a relatively naturalistic way, although their form is now somewhat erased by time (erosion of the stone). The art of the region of ancient Gandhara is often referred to as Greco-Buddhist art, as the inhabitants of Gandhara drew heavily on Greek art and the oldest known representations of the Buddha from this region, dating from the 1st century AD. Our era. they are often compared to the Greek statues of Apollo. From the 4th century BC. that is, during the conquests of Alexander the Great, Greek settlers founded cities in this region, which resulted in an intensive cultural and material exchange of the inhabitants of this region with the Greek and Roman worlds during several centuries.
