Coming from a modest family, son of a cooper father, Henri Lebasque began his studies at the regional school of fine arts in Angers before moving to Paris where he enrolled at the Académie Colarossi in 1886. He collaborated with Ferdinand Humbert on the frescoes of the Pantheon in Paris for six years at from 1888. He exhibited at the Salon of the Society of French Artists, at the Salon des Indépendants, and became friends with Maximilien Luce and Paul Signac. He exhibited at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts. He met impressionists, notably Camille Pissarro in 1894, whom he visited until his death in 1903, and who would have a great influence on him, and Auguste Renoir. He travels to London where he discovers the works of Turner. Lebasque is one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne. The French State bought him Goûter surherbe in 1903. He collaborated with Félix Vallotton and Georges Rouault on ceramic tests at André Metthey in 1906. He produced sets for theaters and various places in Paris and, in 1917, was to be hired as a painter in the army with Félix Vallotton. In 1922, he exhibited at the Eugène Druet gallery. In 1924, he acquired the Beau site villa, which he lived until 1930. Henri Lebasque was appointed officer of the Legion of Honor in 1925 and, after the dissolution of the Georges Petit gallery in 1927, he no longer accepted contract with no art dealer. After Saint-Tropez, Sainte-Maxime, it is finally in Cannet that he chooses to settle permanently. He bought his house there in rue des Danys in 1930, where he frequented Dunoyer de Segonzac and Pierre Bonnard who had settled there in 1925. In November 1934, the decorator Jean Pascaud organized an exhibition in his premises at no 165 boulevard Haussmann. bringing together the works of Jacques Henri Lartigue, Paul Colin, Moïse Kisling, Marie Laurencin, Henri Lebasque, Marcel Roche. Henri Lebasque died on August 7, 1937 in Cannet where he was buried. The painter Marthe Lebasque, his eldest daughter, married the painter Carlos-Reymond.
