Notre Dame de Paris cathedral at sunset, seen from Quai de la Tournelle. Our drawing presents one of the subjects of predilection of Albert Lebourg, impressionist painter affiliated with the school of Rouen: the cathedral of Notre Dame from the preferred point of view of Lebourg, the quai de la Tournelle, which he treated by all the seasons and various times of the day. Typical subject, therefore, declined in a palette of infinite variations. For Lebourg is above all an impressionist, who, once a qualitative subject has been identified, like Monet before him, attempts to capture all the striking nuances of light, difracting his subject which he recomposes in his work, drawings and paintings, from so that Notre Dame is no longer just an architectural immanence but a living monument. Moreover, it is its views of Paris and its navies that remain the most popular and sought after. In 2016, a view of Notre Dame de Paris, sunset in autumn was sold for € 48,000 in Montecarlo. A view of Lake Geneva also reached 72,000 euros in 2012. Our drawing plays with different techniques (watercolor, pastel and charcoal) to capture the orange light of the setting sun where a gray-bluish watercolor Our Lady still pierced by the arrow of Viollet le Duc, in this impressionist treatise, blends in with the sky, seeming to be shrouded in a mysterious mist softening its contours. A fully impressionist atmospheric drawing typical of Lebourg, and representing one of the most precious French monuments. His work is preserved in many French museums, in particular at the Musée d'Orsay, at the Musée des Beaux-arts in Rouen but also in Algeria where he taught in the early 1970s, in Russia, in Geneva and Los Angeles.
