From the work of Jean-Louis Laneuville exhibited at the Museum of the History of France: Impressive full-length portrait of Jean Mathieu Philibert Sérurier, Marshal of Napoleon. Particularly active during the Italian campaign, he distinguished himself during the battles of Mondovia and Mantua. We honor his moral virtues, his probity, he is reluctant to participate in the looting of conquered territories. Let us quote Napoleon in the Memorial of Sainte-Héléne: “Sérurier, born in the department of Aisne, was an infantry major at the time of the Revolution; he had retained all the forms and rigidity of a major. He was very severe on discipline and passed for an aristocrat, which made him run many dangers in the midst of the camps, and especially in the early years. He won the battle of Mondovi and took Mantua. He had the honor of seeing Marshal Wurmser march past him. He was brave, intrepid of himself, but not very happy. He had less momentum than Masséna and Augereau; but he surpassed them by the morality of his character, the wisdom of his political opinions, and the security of his commerce. He had the honorable mission of carrying to the Directory the flags taken from Prince Charles. This oil on canvas taken in a wooden frame comes from the Château de Prat located in Ariège. Built in the 13th century, it was originally the home of the Counts of Comminges. This painting is part of an important series of four large portraits of personalities of the Empire commissioned by the former owner of the castle and in our possession: Maréchal Augereau, Maréchal Victor, Maréchal Sérurier and Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand.
