Born in Lyon, he was a pupil of Joseph Benedict guichard, Antoine Vollon and Puvis. He started the show in 1869 and received a bronze medal in 1889 at the World Expo. admirer of Jean François Millet he painted him as bucolic subjects adapted to everyday reality tinged with a certain melancholy.
