"Sainte Madelaine"
The Bavarian painter, Hans Rottenhammer, made himself famous among other things by painting in small format. Our copper, of Venetian inspiration, depicts a Saint Magdalene, naked, with its attributes of vanities that are the skull, symbol of the beauty which fades as well as the vase of perfume which was used to anoint the feet of Christ at Simon's house. The Pharisee. The presence of the Cross and the open Bible expresses his vow of penance indicating the path to follow to obtain Eternal Life. Under his left hand, the presence of a discipline (small hemp-based whip) completes this panoply intended for repentance. The singular presence of this small navy, in the background, makes our work particularly atypical. Indeed, it is rare to see representations of Saint Magdalene in such a landscape.
