This portrait of a woman with her favorite dog was executed by the famous French painter and printmaker Charles Joshua Chaplin (1825 - 1921). He was born in Les Andelys, Eure, France to an English father and a French mother. Although he spent his entire life in France, he was not naturalized until 1886. He died in Paris. Chaplin led art classes especially for women in his studio. The American artist Mary Cassatt and the English artist Louise Jopling compose the part of the pupils of Chaplin. Chaplin's paintings can be found in museums around the world: Hermitage, St. Petersburg; Louvre and Orsay, Paris; Metropolitan Museum, New York.
