"Surrealist Gouache By Artur Do Cruzeiro Seixas"
Surrealism period Magnificent surreal gouache on paper by Artur Do Cruzeiro Seixas (born in 1920). In its original frame, work in good condition, many biography on this great painter. Signed lower left and dated. Artur do Cruzeiro Seixas is still wonderfully active today at the age of 100. His first surrealist paintings date back to 1942. He was only 22 at the time, but he had already found his privileged forms of expression, art and poetry, and his universe, surrealism, to which he would remain faithful throughout his life. In 1947, he participated in the exhibition of the group “Os Surrealistas” and joined the group of Portuguese surrealists founded by Mario Cesariny. André Breton had defined surrealism as "pure psychic automatism". He considered automatism to be the “keystone” of movement. Artur is, along with André Masson, the artist par excellence who gave automatic drawing its full potential. He draws brilliantly, in an almost daze. It gives birth to an unprecedented universe where all the kingdoms merge. A quick, incisive line, without repentance. With him, the pen "runs on paper", to use Breton's expression and, with a continuous line, chisels transforming shapes. Artur's decisive contribution to surrealism is precisely this uninterrupted practice of automatic drawing. Few artists have made it their exclusive mode of expression like him. Founder of the anti-group “Os Surrealistas” in 1949 in Lisbon, Portugal, Cruzeiro Seixas leaves us an immense artistic work which must continue to be celebrated. Cruzeiro Seixas collaborates with Perve Galeria since the beginning, in 2000, by organizing exhibitions personal and in collaboration with other artists such as Mário Cesariny, Fernando José Francisco, Aldo Alcota, Valter Hugo Mãe, among others. December 3, 1920 - November 8, 2020 Cruzeiros Seixas was highly regarded in Portugal where he was considered the leader of the surrealist movement. Painter and poet, he realizes his gouaches and drawings in a quasi-stupor, which favors automatism. From 1948, he was part of the Portuguese surrealist group founded by Mario Cesariny. His universe is populated by hybrids that intertwine or merge to form plural bodies.Pegasus, the winged horse born from the blood of Medusa, is like a doppelganger of the artist. The winged horse, like the boat, are invitations to travel. Sculpted ice floes and bevelled icebergs serve as a framework for a glacial world under which a blazing fire smolders. Edouard Jaguer, who made Seixas famous in Paris, dares the image of the “crystal where the enigma is consumed with its own incandescence.” Seixas practices in his own way the surrealist image which, bringing opposites together, acts as an alchemical principle, a transformer of energy. think of André Breton's collection of poems L'Air, where flame and snow were already mingling. Text by Françoise Py, Lecturer at the University of Paris 8 in history and theories of art. "Reality does everything to merge with the imagination" The Dorothy's Gallery has exhibited his works and lithographs since 2009.
