Great Religious Painting “the Last Supper” 17th School Of Antwerp Gillis Congnet / Jan Harmensz

Very beautiful and large oil on canvas seventeenth, in perfect condition on its original chassis.

Very decorative, this painting is a representation of “The Last Supper” after the engraving by Jan Harmensz Muller, preserved at the Rijksmuseum Museum in Amsterdam. (photo no. 12)
The engraving itself is inspired by a painting by Gillis Coignet “The last supper”, a painting belonging to the British royal family in the “Royal Collection”. (photo no. 11).

Jan Harmensz Muller (1571-1628) is a Dutch painter, draughtsman, engraver of the golden century. Son of the picture-cutter Harman Jansz Muller, he is probably a pupil of Hendrick Goltzius, he had to go to Italy around 1595 where he took the nickname of Gruvnik. His work is important and shows the influence of his master as well as the painter Bartholomeus Spranger.

Gillis Congnet or Coignet is a Flemish painter born in 1538 and died in 1599. It is known for its historical and mythological subjects, landscapes and scenes illuminated by candlelight and moonlight.
Pupil of Lambrecht Wenslyns and Anton Van Palermo, then of Stello, in Terni. He travels to Naples and Sicily. He was master in Antwerp in 1561, and dean of the guild in 1583. His pupils were Simon Ykeus in 1570, Jac Hermans in 1571, Gaspard Doones in 1574, Robert Huls in 1584, Claes Pieterz and Cornelis Cornelisen. Some of his works are in the museums of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Gotha Arras and Stockholm.
