The Vegetables: Bowling Game Circa 1860
THE VEGETABLES: bowling game circa 1860 Painted and varnished papier-mâché bowling game. It is formed by 9 skittles 30 cm high with figures in the shape of vegetables and a cabbage-shaped box 36 cm in diameter. A loose leaf on the face of the cabbage acts as a cover. Personified vegetables were a fashionable subject around 1850, after the publication of the book The Empire of Vegetables by Nus and Meray illustrated by A Varin. A book in the style of Grandville which recounts the memories of Cucurbitus I, a squash man in a world of animated vegetables. Extremely rare museum piece.
