Peter van Boucle 1610-1673 Still life with birds and hare Oil on canvas 64 x 53 cm resp. 81 X 71 cm We thank Dr Fred G. Meijer, Amsterdam, for the written confirmation of authorship. Cf: Still life with birds and hares ao Sothebys, New York, 11.1.1990, No. 92A € 47.960 Drouot-Richelieu, Paris, 2.6.2021, no. 24 € 19,500 (in English) Peter van Boucle (between 1600 and 1610 (?), Probably Antwerp - 1673, Paris) was a Flemish Baroque painter who worked much of his life in Paris, where he was one of the most prolific Flemish painters of still lifes. There is little information about the life and training of Peter van Boucle. He claimed to have been a pupil of Frans Snyders, but there is no written source in Antwerp to support this claim. However, some stylistic similarities in his works suggest that he worked closely with Frans Snijders. Van Boucle's father, Carel, was an engraver who had become master of the guild of Saint-Luc in Antwerp in 1603 and had emigrated to Paris in 1617. Peter van Boucle is recorded with his father in Paris in 1623. At this time , many Flemish artists were active in the district of Saint-Germain des-Près in Paris. He worked for a time with the painter of still lifes Lubin Baugin in the studio of Simon Vouet. They made drawings for tapestries there (nowhere to be found). He probably also knew the painters of still lifes Jacques Linard and Louise Moillon, because his work has similarities to theirs. According to the first French biographer Florent le Comte, despite his artistic success, he died in poverty due to his dissolute life. Van Boucle mainly painted still lifes and paintings of animals. He is considered one of the best Flemish animal painters, along with Pieter Boel and Nicasius Bernaerts. Van Boucle often adorns his compositions with still lifes of cats and dogs, like his master Frans Snyders. He worked for several patrons, including nobles and courtiers. Most of his works are now in private collections. Inv.No. 1,703 9,750 €
