This splendid large 17th century canvas represents the solemn moment of the "Coronation of the Virgin", one of the most fascinating and pleasant sacred images.
The painting is divided into two parts: the "terrestrial" part of the scene with a beautiful landscape decorated with flowers is described below. A blanket of clouds separates the two sets and seems to support the main scene of the painting where the figures of the protagonists stand out against a celestial context, illuminated by a supernatural light.
The Virgin, in the most classic decoration, is represented in the center of the scene with at her sides God the Father and the Son who extend their arms and hold the crown over her head. The Holy Trinity is completed by the Dove of the Holy Spirit. Angels and cherubs hidden in the clouds enliven the composition.
The canvas presents magnificent colors with a play of shadow and light very guessed.
The work highlights the unmistakable stylistic and chromatic connotations of the production of Guglielmo Caccia aka "il Moncalvo", the most important representative of the Piedmontese Counter-Reformation. He was a great painter of altarpieces and religious canvases and distinguished himself by his frescoes carried out in churches between Piedmont and Lombardy at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Our canvas is a valid example and both the frame and the chromaticism denote his penchant for the fresco technique.
