"Predella (?) With A Nativity And 15 Saints, Germany Or Tyrol, Circa 1520"
Large poplar panel (?) Painted with Nativity decoration, the Virgin and Child being surrounded by several Saints, 15 in number, from Christian history. In view of the dimensions of the panel and its composition, it is undoubtedly a predella. The predella is the lower part of a polyptych altarpiece, developed horizontally, which serves as a support for the main panels, and where a series of subjects appear in relation to the main theme in general. It is a type of painting characteristic of the 14C and 15C, but lasted until the 16C. It can be made up of a single board in length, or of several elements separated during the dismantling of the polyptych. Southern Germany (Bavaria), or Tyrol, circa 1520.
