Beautiful work by the Avignon painter Pierre Grivolas which represents a young shepherdess accompanied by her dog and her flock of sheep in a landscape of Provence . The scene most certainly takes place in the vicinity of Mont-Ventoux in the Vaucluse where the artist was going to paint.

A pupil of Ingres, Delacroix and Flandrin, he exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1864 and 1882. Friend of the poets Félibrige, he will endeavor to translate the traditions of Provence and the Comtadines. In 1878, he was appointed director of the Ecole des Beaux-arts in the city of Avignon, a position he held until his death in 1906. Considered to be the leader of the Nouvelle Ecole d'Avignon, he will inspire by his teaching in the open air and his virtuosity in the use of colors including white many of his students, future artists.

The Louis Vouland Foundation in Avignon organized a major retrospective, with more than a hundred works by the artist, from November 2008 to January 2009, a book of which has been published. The work presented is unpublished and does not appear in this work.

Dimensions: 64 x 45 cm without its frame and 79 x 60 cm with its American wooden box frame.
