Otto Karl Kasimir VON THOREN (1828-1889) “Chiens Courants au Clair de Lune” Oil on panel Signed lower right 55 x 42 cm In its wooden frame and carved and gilded stucco 81.5 x 69 cm Biography: Karl Kasimir Otto Ritter von Thoren, known as Otto von Thoren (born July 21, 1828 in Vienna, Austria, died July 15, 1889 in Paris) is an animal painter. Otto von Thoren is the son of Francis-Casimir de Thoron and Constance-Marie-Françoise Lochmann. Officer in 1846, he participated in the Austrian Revolution of 1848, he was captain of cuirassiers, then moved away for a time to Venice. In 1857, he turned completely to painting and studied for several years in Brussels and Paris. In the mid-1860s, he was called to Vienna to paint the portrait of Franz Joseph I of Austria. After painting The Death of Gustave-Adolphe, he turned to animal painting, in particular grazing cattle, where he distinguished himself by an energetic line and his delicate observation of nature. Otto von Thoren's paintings are often found in Austrian museums such as the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum (Museum of Military History) in Vienna. He married Marie-Sophie Renodeyn, born in Ghent in 1839, during his stay in Brussels. The death and funeral of “knight Othon von Thoren, talented animal painter” are announced in the Journal des debates politiques et littéraires of July 17, 1889 1. He is buried in the Montmartre cemetery, 22nd division (family grave). The widow of Otto von Thoren gives two paintings of her husband to the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris 2, today assigned to the Musée d'Orsay and the town hall of Pamiers. Othon de Thoren has a son who is also a painter and illustrator, Maurice de Thoren, whose death is announced on July 2, 1940 in "L'Écho d'Alger"
