Son of sculptor Gérard Van Goolen. Pupil of J. Maes at the Academy of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and of L. Devos at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (1940-1944 and 1946-1947), where he taught from 1953 to 1985 Professor also at the Academy of Fine Arts in Boitsfort. Second Rome Prize (1947), Henri Evenepoel Prize (1947), Célestin Jacquet Prize (1949), Henri Ottevaere Prize. Friend of HV Wolvens, L. Thévenet, E. Tytgat. His favorite themes are: the North Sea, intimate scenes, the landscapes of Provence. The expressionist temptation of his beginnings gradually softened in favor of a more intimate, more sober and more refined work, balanced and with a contained fervor. Interest in light. A tribute was paid to him in 1992 at the town hall of Schaerbeek (Brussels).
