In the company of Paul GAUGUIN, Claude-Emile SCHUFFENECKER regularly went to Pont-Aven to paint in the mid-1880s.
He will recommend Emile BERNARD to GAUGUIN and will be one of the pillars of this "school".
He exhibited at the Salon of 1880 and 1881, before being refused in 1882 and 1883 and participating in the creation of the Salon des Indépendants the following year.
In 1886, he participated in the eighth and last exhibition of the impressionists in the company of Berthe MORISOT, Edgar DEGAS, Camille PISSARRO ...
His work is marked by various influences: pointillism, symbolism, Gauguin ...
He is also known to have owned works by Van Gogh and Cézanne, which he "improved", which gave him a reputation as a forger during the following century before these allegations were denied.

Among the many museums with his works, let us quote: the Museums of Fine Arts of Brest, Quimper, Pont Aven, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam ...

SCHUFFENECKER's paintings can sell for more than 100,000 euros, he is a very sought-after artist given his participation in the Pont-Aven school.

SCHUFFENECKER regularly represented the cliffs of Etretat, which is one of his emblematic subjects. Among the greatest painters who illustrated Etretat, we can cite MONET, COURBET, JONGKIND, COROT, BOUDIN ...

We would like to thank Mrs Jill Elyse GROSSVOGEL, specialist in the work of SCHUFFENECKER, author of the painter's catalogue raisonné, for confirming the authenticity of this painting, which will take part in its archives and will be included in the next catalogue raisonné.

A certificate of authenticity written by Mrs GROSSVOGEL will be given to the buyer
