French School, Marie-madeleine Pénitente, Late 17th Century
French school from the last third of the 17th century representing penitent Marie-Madeleine.
She is represented in front of an open book meditating on the holy scriptures, her left hand resting on a skull symbol of vanity near a vase of perfume and a pearl necklace, images of her former life.
oil on canvas in oval shape (small restorations), mounted on a more recent frame (XIXth?). On the back of the canvas are the letters A and G. Mounted in a pretty frame in wood and gilded stucco and openwork in the Baroque style, with foliage patterns (certainly XIXth century).
