Garbe Antoine-philippe, Tripod Mustard Pot In Solid Silver, Paris 1783-1784

Tripod mustard pot in solid silver decorated with Bacchic attributes such as laughing mascarons, vines and ivy garlands, vine leaves, held by ribbons and framing beaded medallions. It has in the central part a medallion held by putti and its grip is decorated with oak leaves. The cover is made of strong gadroons, the fretel resting on a terrace of radiating bay leaves. The cover and the body of the piece are punctuated by friezes and pearls and astragals of different sizes. It rests three small feet finished with balls.

• Master silversmith - under the base of the body and inside the lid: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two seeds of remedy, APG for Antoine-Philippe GARBE.
• Maison commune - under the bottom of the body and inside the cover: U crowned for Paris 1783-1784.
• Charge - under the bottom of the body and inside the cover: two interlaced Ls for Paris, 1782-1789.
• Discharge - under the bottom of the body and above the cover: Peasant's head in profile for Paris 1782-1786.
• Hallmarked later under the bottom of the body and above the cover: 1er coq (French mark for solid silver in Paris between 1787 and 1809).
• Hallmarked later under the bottom of the body and above the cover: Average guarantee of Paris 1798-1809.
• Hallmarked later under the bottom of the body and above the cover: French Minerve.

Weight: 196 grams. Net weight: 100 grams.

Engraved with an elegant monogram in English letters after its manufacture. Old blue crystal verrine.


Condition report
By the number of its hallmarks inscribed during its history and the integrity of its conservation, this small mustard pot is a real piece of antiquity,touching and scientifically interesting, illustrating the life of an object through the centuries. As such, we have made the choice to consider it as a historical object and not to proceed with any "decorative" restoration. The traces of time are therefore visible and in particular the slight cracks which have formed at the level of the welds. This deserves to be clarified and does not call into question the quality and solidity of its structure.


Antoine-Philippe GARBE, guaranteed by Jacques ROETTIERS, was received as a master in Paris in 1748. We find traces of his work until 1787.
