VERDILHAN Louis-Mathieu (1875-1928)

“Bouquet of flowers - Still life”

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower left,

Beautiful work with strong contrast by the Provençal master Louis-Mathieu Verdilhan which represents a bouquet of flowers on an entablature, perhaps a bouquet of anemones.

Born in Saint-Gilles-du-Gard, Louis-Mathieu Verdilhan arrived with his family in Marseille in 1877. In 1890, he began his apprenticeship with a house painter and tried his hand at drawing under the encouragement of the painter Eugène Giraud. In 1898, he made a first stay in Paris and worked on the decoration of the Universal Exhibition of 1900 with the decorator Karbowski. It was during this period that the artist lost his left eye, although one-eyed, he continued to paint.

From 1905, the artist took part in exhibitions in Paris and Marseille as well as in the Salons des Indépendants, d'Automne. When the First World War began, the artist was mobilized in Toulon. Louis-Mathieu Verdilhan rubbed shoulders with many artists such as André Suarez, Antoine Bourdelle and Albert Marquet from whom he was influenced.
The work of Louis-Mathieu Verdilhan is similar to Fauvism by its palette of colors and the simplicity of its line. Self-taught painter, he develops and explores this current by having his own interpretation.

His growing fame, the artist exhibited in 1923 in New York and in 1925 collaborated on the decor of the Provence pavilion at the International Decorative Arts Exhibition. Louis-Mathieu Verdilhan died prematurely at the age of 53 from cancer.
His works are now kept in many museums in France and abroad.

Dimensions: 55 x 46 cm without frame and 71 x 62 cm with its modern black wooden frame.
